Moxi whole-home six tuner DVR on its way to WOW! customers

Just because Arris found limited success with its Moxi DVR in the consumer space, that doesn't mean it won't continue to seek success providing hardware to cable companies. Ultra TV is what the number 15 TV provider (432k subscribers) in the US, WOW!, will be calling the 6 tuner, 500GB multi-room DVR, with MoCA, VOIP and WiFi -- a deal that seems to be a bit better than the one TiVo offers for the number 16 provider in the US, RCN. The Moxi user interface in the video below looks like the Moxi we know, but we assume the DVR gateway and players will resemble the Shaw counterparts rather than the retail ones. A comment on the WOW Buzz blog indicates that a gateway and two players will set you back $25 a month, while another indicates that installs are already being scheduled.

  1. The capacity of the hard drive sounds impressive at first but when I think about how much storage DISH’s Hopper has (2TB), 500GB suddenly seems petite. It uses MoCA to deliver an HD feed to each TV and can record up to six shows at once including the PrimeTime Anytime feature. PrimeTime Anytime, once enabled, records all of the primetime HD content from CBS, NBC, FOX, and ABC and saves it for eight days. If you want to keep the content, you can choose to save it and it’s as easy as setting a recording. I can’t wait until it’s released. I work for DISH so have a vague idea of when it’s due out and will be watching so I can get my own. In my opinion, the Hopper beats DirecTV, Moxi, and any other whole home DVR any day.

  2. The Arris does not have as much storage space as DISH's Hopper with a 2 terabyte hard drive. I just got the Hopper installed in my home over the Saint Patrick’s Day weekend and I so excited to tell everyone about it. A DISH co-worker told me that I could record up to 2,000 shows on the Hopper and I can tell you that it delivers customers with full DVR functions in all four rooms connected to the Hopper. The Hopper comes with three client boxes called Joeys and each of the have a HDMI connection of the back, so you'll have full HD picture in all four rooms. I so glad that I choose to get DISH service because they are now offering customers who sign up for DISH the Hopper free!
